A lesson from the Muppets: amazing content will drive sales

This past Sunday my wife and I decided to see the matinee showing of The Muppets. I won’t give you a movie review; there are people who do a better job of that on other blogs (although I approve of Rotten Tomatoes’ rating). What I will do is share what a business can learn from the Muppet experience.

Here it is: Amazing content will drive sales.

Content stimulates consumer engagement, which in turn generates traffic and leads to sales. Since 1974, Jim Henson’s Muppets starred in television episodes, music videos, movies and now YouTube videos. Yet, I’ve never seen a single show with advertisements about the Muppets’ toys, books, computer games or any other Muppet merchandise (which, by the way, accounts for millions of dollars in revenue each year).

Encourage your business to push content marketing. Offer search-engine-friendly content that is thoughtfully organized and speaks to your visitors’ needs. For example, professionals love a good article from a thought leader in their industry or a helpful top 10 list rounding up great tips and ideas.

And whatever content you provide, don’t forget the importance of quick connectivity; always include a way for your prospect to reach you. Whichever method you choose call tracking number, a download form, an email address make sure the method is quick and measurable.

Frequent and repeated exposure to your prospects through content marketing is a great way to build relationships. Rather than a one-and-done sales approach, content marketing provides multiple conversions while establishing a brand.

Your business might not have a catchy song, a wise and beloved frog, or a comedic bear to help you produce years of great content, but you do have a blog. Start writing!
