Mistakes, Misconceptions And Social Media

DialogTech

New entrepreneurs, here are some words from the wise:

“There is no magic.”

Tough but true. For marketing entrepreneurs, social media is treated often like golden goose when it’s really more of a black box. Marketers hope with just a few updates a video goes viral or a post is re-blogged onto front page of Buzzfeed. For most marketing entrepreneurs, wildly successful results like these are elusive, unlikely, and not as easy as they look. Meanwhile, companies are unable to answer important questions like “how much is a ‘Like’ on Facebook worth to my business?” and simply left wondering about their social media ROI.

Earlier today, DialogTech CEO Irv Shapiro shared his assessment of social media and where it’s falling short with TECHCocktail. The three most common mistakes and misconceptions Shapiro sees marketers making about social media are:

  • Social is not magic
  • There’s no measurement
  • Marketers only measure online activity

While social media isn’t the magic bullet some marketers hope it will be, Irv agrees that social media will continue to be hugely valuable to brands–as long as they first understand the tools and importance of measurement.
