April 20, 2018 News & Trends

One of the many things our team excels at is implementing employee-led initiatives. When a few DialogTechies saw room for improvement in our office sustainability practices, they set out to inspire change. As a team, we brainstormed ideas for improvement.

We’re excited to share with you our favorite ideas we’re implementing for a less wasteful and more environmentally aware workplace.

Steer Clear of the Coffee Pod

Pod-based coffee machines are the most polarizing small kitchen appliance in existence. Convenient? Definitely. Eco-friendly? Definitely not. As of 2015, it was reported that up to 9 billion coffee pod cups end up in landfills per year. A traditional coffee pot creates substantially less waste per cup.

Set After-Hours Timers for Screens

If a screen is left on after hours and there is no one around to see it glow, does it still waste energy? Screen technology has been trending towards less energy-consuming for a while, but an unwatched screen is still burning natural resources that could be better used elsewhere. Timers allow screens to turn off at set times and back on when needed, reducing the need for powering on and off manually.

Make Recycling Easy

Many offices have recycling bins, but it’s not always clear which types of materials should be placed into which bins. Post signage near recycling and trash centers for easy reference and see your recyclables-to-trash ratio decrease.

Ditch Disposable Coffee Cups and Bottled Water

Did you know that the equivalent of 17 million barrels of oil are used to produce plastic water bottles in the US each year? Reusable water bottles, like the ones each one of our new employees receives, promote less waste and more hydration. Aside from being great vehicles for infusing a little personality into your desk atmosphere, coffee mugs are an easy way to create less waste each day.

Make Being Eco-Friendly Part of Your Culture

Keep each other accountable by making an eco-friendly office environment something everyone takes pride in. To get everyone on board, survey your office on initiatives that are most important to them. We don’t know about you, but we DialogTechies sure like our coffee and are very passionate about it! To celebrate Earth Day, and incentivize actively reducing waste, we brought in a private barista to brew delicious drinks for those team members using a reusable mug.
